Welcome to my site!

This website analyzes the birthplaces of professional hockey players from round the world, who played professional hockey in North America as it has changed over the years. On these pages I show maps outlining these trends. Using both stationary and moving maps, this website shows the trends and the fluxuation in the origins of hockey players. If you would like to further investigate the maps, simply sign up for www.geocommons.com, and search the tag "HIST 4170." The data includes players only born after 1899, who have played more than 10 games.  These maps are looking at the trends not only around the world, but also within Canada and the United States. When looking at the maps, ask yourselves When do Europeans really start to make the voyage over to North America? How prevalent are they? What about Canada? What trends do we see within Canada as well as the United States? This information allows to predict future trends in were professional players will be from. It also helps us to analyze which countries have been the most dominant on the professional scale in North America.

This website argues that interest in hockey within Canada has allowed it to be a consistent dominant force in the professional leagues. In Europe, many see North American professinal hokey to be superior, both competitvely as well a financially. This site will also analyze the importance of the Cold War on pro hockey in North America.

The data for these maps was provided to me by Professor Andrew Ross of the University of Guelph.
